June 3...Jaipur

On the morning of my 4th day in northern India we headed to Amber Fort. I am staying in Jaipur today to look around, since we did not get here until the afternoon yesterday.

Passing an elephant on the road...

And a camel too...

Amber Fort...You can take an elephant ride up to the fort, but I decided to walk, but I couldn't resist taking a picture of the elephants...

Wow...what a long walk to get to the entrance of Amber Fort...

Jaigarh Fort across the road...

Entrance to Amber Fort called Surajpol...

Inside Amber Fort...

Room inside the palace within the fort covered in thousands of tiny mirrors...

Jal Mahal, a tiny palace located in the middle of a small lake. This was supposed to be a hunting lodge for the royal family. It can only be viewed from the banks of the lake...

City Palace...

The largest silver vessel in the world (1.6 meters or 5'3" tall), according to the Guinness Book of World Records. There are two of them at the City Palace. These vessels were made for Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II, who took them along with him filled with water from River Ganga for drinking. As a devout Hindu the Maharaja did not wish to risk drinking polluted English waters...

Jantar Manar, a collection of architectural astronomical instruments, built by Maharaja (King) Jai Singh II between 1727 and 1734. There are five of them in various locations, including Delhi, but this one is the largest...

My astrological sign, Virgo...

John Deere seems to follow me wherever I go. The hotel I was staying at in Jaipur (Four Points by Sheraton [fabulous hotel]) was having a John Deere conference. Some of you know how much I like John Deere. I saw the sign and it made me smile. The second John Deere sign I have seen in India (first being in Chennai)...

And so my 4th day of my northern India trip comes to a close...not without some difficulty I might add...my driver yelled at me today and I spent much of the afternoon in the hotel. I spoke with my travel agent and will have a new driver to take me back to Delhi tomorrow...
